“The Legend of the Thousand and One Nights: A Performance of Scheherazade” is a multimedia theatre performance that tells the story of Shorrazade, a fictional Persian princess, whose ability to spin stories saves her from death by execution. Belcourt, performed with his band, The Emile Belcourt band in the past- whom he toured with for several years until they disbanded. The music they played was similar to the sound of American singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright, but stripped down to a more basic level. The songs are written in minor keys and have theatrical elements that are reminiscent of the music found in musical theatre shows. His voice is very gentle and relaxing-and can fit into multiple genres of music. The show also features a stage direction by Jack Thorne, who is most well known for his work with the British Shakespearian Theatre Company. He is currently best known for his script adaptation of "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child", which will be the eighth play to feature the main character, Harry Potter. The show also inspired American director Jamie Lloyd after seeing it at Drama Works New York. Lloyd stated that she was “really moved” by this production because “Shakespeare’s words are so powerful but you don’t really hear them spoken out loud like this. For the audience to hear Shakespeare’s words and see what happens to them on stage, I feel like that’ll be an opportunity for us all to re-discover these characters.” The play is performed by actors dressed in period costume. The show premiered in 2006 and has been performed at theatres across the world including: Baalbek, Paris, Montreal La Salle Lajeunesse, Vienna and Vienna.
